Z3635 One-Piece Pewter Thomas Porter "Slave Trade" Button

Description: Thomas Porter II (1790-1857) was a prominent slave trader from England. It is believed these buttons were manufactured for Thomas Porter II rather than his father Thomas Porter I (1748-1815). Regardless, both men were heavily involved in the slave trade in South America (Guyana) until emancipation in 1834. These buttons are referred to as identification buttons. It is very probable that these buttons were worn on the clothing of his slaves or merchants based on the sheer number that have been recovered.
