Z4724 Scarce Early U.M.C. Box with Handwritten Label by Dr. Edward Maynard

Description: Scarce early U.M.C. box with a handwritten label describing the contents of the box. The label reads as follows:

10. .40 Cal. loaded cartridges with hollow projectile for explosive.

4. .40 Cal. do loaded and primed.

2. 50 cal do loaded and primed.

This explosive projectile is the suggestion of General Meigs U.S. Engineers.

There is a similar box with label in the most recent IAA journal. If you aren't a member, I'd recommend signing up! The pasteboard box has several issues including soiling, creases, split seams, etc. The back and left side of the lid have been covered/replaced and there are internal supports. Fortunately, someone recognized the box for what it was and saved it! The label is describing different types of Maynard cartridges used in conjunction with Mead's patented explosive tip bullets. The Patent No. was 133.714 issued on December 10, 1872.
