Z5140 Adams Express Company Coat Button
Description: Nice coat size example worn by employees of the Adams Express Company. The company was created by Alvin Adams in the 1840's and by 1855 they were officially organized as the "Adams Express Company." They handled letters and packages were large shareholders in quite a few railroad operations. This company is still in business today and is known as the Adams Diversified Equity Fund. This button bears the backmark of the American Button Company located in Newark, New Jersey. McGuinn & Bazelon state that the American Button Company "Began making uniform buttons in 1901 per letter in the US National Museum Collections. The factory burned in 1917 & the company ceased to exist in 1920." Nice coat size example with a stand up shank intact.
