Z5467 .58 Gardiner Explosive Bullet
Description: Very nice explosive bullet manufactured under Patent No. 40,468 of November 23, 1863. This patent was awarded to Samuel Gardiner Jr. of New York, New York for an improvement in constructing hollow projectiles such as this explosive bullet. The hardened lead was poured around a two-piece copper vessel that held the explosive charge. The patent document states the following, "When the musket or gun is fired, the powder ignites the fuse, which will burn one or more seconds, as the time of burning the fuse may have been arranged. When the explosive material in the cup is ignited, the shell immediately explodes.” This is a choice dug example! The majority of the writing can be deciphered around the bottom rim on the base. There is an old written letter "F” on this side of this projectile. You would be hard pressed to dig an example like this today!
