Z5552 Scarce Medium Size US Box Plate (Antietam)
Description: Decent medium size US box plate known as the 1839 pattern plate. This is one of two patterns of the medium size plates. This one has some rim loss and both attachment loops have rusted off the back.

This plate was recovered from what was known as the Miller farm located off of Mansfield Avenue in the "East Woods." It was recovered by Bill Robinson in the late 1990's just off of the road in a little rock outcrop. This area is located about 150 yards from where General Mansfield was mortally wounded. If you turn onto Mansfield Avenue, you will come to a sharp left hand turn in the road. This plate was recovered in the woods on the right, after the turn. I'm not sure who owns the land now but at the time it was either owned by Mr. Keefauver or Rufus Martin.

This plate was part of my first collection of relics I purchased years ago. Bill was probably one of the most generous diggers in the area and was one hell of a guy. Bill had a passion for local history and assisted several diggers with locating their first bullet. A memory that won't be forgotten by any of us!

Measures: 49 mm x 77 mm
Recovered: Miller Farm, Sharpsburg, Maryland in the late 90’s by the late William "Bill” Robinson
Reference: O’Donnell & Campbell Plate 515
