Z5599 .45-70 Multi-Ball Cartridge by Phoenix
Description: A fine .45-70 Multiball cartridge manufactured by the Phoenix Metallic Cartridge Company using casings manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal. The Phoenix Metallic cartridge company was based out of South Coventry, Connecticut and owned by Joseph Merwin & Milan Hulbert. In 1879 a few different variants were tested and found to be unfavorable for field use. This example has a tight salmon colored paper sabot coated with wax. Unfortunately, I don’t have an x-ray of this one to determine which tested variant this is. The overall weight in grains is 558. A scarcer Indian War cartridge!
