Z6145 .50 Gallager Carbine Cartridge (Poultney’s Patent)
Description: Nice example of the .50 Gallager carbine cartridge manufactured under Poultney's Patent No. 40,988 dated December 15, 1863. This Civil War cartridge uses a .50 Smith Carbine projectile wrapped in a thin sheet of brass that is covered in paper. The idea was that once fired, the brass foil would expand creating a gas check in the breech of the gun. The bullet is slightly oxidized, and the paper is slightly soiled. This one has a small depression on one side due to the way the bullets were stacked in the box.
