Z6620 British Marine Other Ranks Button (Pre-1802 Pattern)
Description: Nice excavated British Marine button in pewter for other ranks or enlisted men. This example has the incised fouled anchor with a "pie crust” or "scalloped” border. On April 29, 1802, this pattern officially changed to include "Royal Marines” above a fouled anchor with the laurel wreath below. The laurel wreath was an honor for service at Belle Isle. Even though there was an official change in 1802, this style of button continued to be used on up through the War of 1812. The style used in the Revolutionary War is very similar, but the internal raised portion of the face is more substantial and like the King’s 8th Regiment buttons of the Rev. War period.

Decent excavated example that appears to be a water recovery. The shank rusted away long ago. This one has decent detail on the face with a couple of small edge pushes and a slightly wavy surface.
