Z7442 Rare Adams "Dustbin” Revolver Cartridge by Eley
Description: Very rare .44 or 54 gauge "Dustbin” cartridge used in the Model 1851 Adams revolver. This is the earliest style of the Adams "Dustbin” cartridges. On October 1, 1852, Robert Adams was awarded British Patent No. 1 in 1852. This was the first British metallic pistol cartridge and the first metallic cartridge to be manufactured by Eley Bros. of London. This example has a two-piece copper case, a small fibrous wad, and a lead bullet with an elongated tail.
These cartridges were preloaded, and press fit into the chambers of the cylinder. Each capsule had a piece of very thin paper holding the powder charge in place. You would simply remove the rear cap, force the cartridge into the cylinder, and fire the revolver. I’ve sold a few of these over the years and this is the first example that is still loaded. There is a very thin piece of blue paper holding the powder charge in the case. The lightly oxidized bullet has a single groove for lubricant. There is a small piece of fiber wad that is missing, and the case is lightly oxidized. You would be hard pressed to upgrade this example! A hard-to-find Pre-Civil War Adams "Dustbin” revolver cartridge!
