Description: Exceptionally rare .30 Whitworth hexagonal cartridge for the .30 sporting rifle. This example has a hexagonal pasteboard tube wrapped around a .30 hexagonal bullet with a paper patch. It has a cannelure on one end and a green paper strip on the other which is secured by a linen tear strip. This cartridge is manufactured in the exact same pattern as the .45 pasteboard hexagonal Whitworth cartridges but on a much smaller scale. This example has a few pushes around the case mouth. The pasteboard tube is lightly soiled, and part of the green strip is missing. Buttweiler states the example listed in his auction catalogue is one of only two known at the time of his publication. It’s important to note that these were manufactured around the time of the American Civil War but there is no documentation that these were ever shipped to troops in the North or South. A very rare .30 Whitworth hexagonal cartridge. I have included a picture of the cartridge next to a standard .45 Whitworth cartridge which is not for sale. It's only for a size comparison.
Measures: OAL 2.337” D .373”
