Description: Original Civil War paper cartridge for the Pattern 1853 (P-53) Enfield rifled musket. This example is relatively clean and was pulled out of a packet dated 1862. This example holds a .577 Enfield projectile with a boxwood plug. There is a slice in the case towards the rear or base of the cartridge. These slices were done at the factory. They created a weak point in the paper which allowed the lead ball to be easily removed. There is a little swelling and a small tear at the edge of the slice along with another very small hole on the other side. This style of cartridge was imported through the blockade to both sides.
