Z8043 Civil War Federal Poncho Hook

Description: Nice excavated Federal poncho hook. These were manufactured under U.S. Patent 36,933 which was award to Abel Putnam Jr. on November 11, 1862. He was awarded this patent for an "Improvement in Spring-Hooks for Fastening Garments.”

This example is constructed of a standard U.S. General Service button face with a plating tin back. The spring hook is placed into the hole on the reverse and held in place by tension. These were used with the rubberized ponchos that were issued to the troops.

This is an excavated example. The iron spring-hook on the back is present with pitting. The face of the button portion is very nice without any pushes or cracks. These are becoming increasingly hard to find in complete, dug condition!
