Z8316 Federal Regulation 1839 Pattern US Cartridge Box Plate
Description: Nice example of a US cartridge box plate recovered in the fields approximately 300 yards South of Philip Pry’s house (McClellan’s Headquarters). This example is flat, and the right side is slightly pushed forward. The face has a pleasing chocolate patina. The reverse retains most of the lead solder and the iron attachment loops are missing. The tag on the back reads as follows:

It's important to note that this specific plate die pattern doesn’t show up in campsites used in the Maryland 1862 campaign. This die pattern does fit in with sites used in 1863+. There were several camps in this vicinity after Gettysburg and it may have been lost there at that time.

Recovered: Field 300 yards south of McClellan’s Headquarters, Sharpsburg, Maryland (Antietam)
