Z8329 Federal J.P. Schenkl Artillery Percussion Fuse
Description: Very nice excavated Schenkl artillery percussion fuse. On October 15, 1861, John P. Schenkl was awarded US Patent No. 33495 for an improvement in the safety concussion-fuse for explosive projectiles to be discharged from Ordnance.
In short, the shell has a side screw that keeps the slider in position and free from movement while in transport. The screw can be removed prior to firing which allows the slider to fall into position. Once the shell impacts the target, the slider moves forward crushing the percussion cap which in turn ignites the powder chamber.
This is an excellent excavated example with a clear name and patent date on the top. The patent date is incorrect and should have been October 15th which was the actual day the patent was awarded. The safety screw may have snapped off. The head of the screw is missing. The threads are crisp, and this one still has some original brass shine to it. An early recovery!
