12 Ga. Winchester “Powder Sample” Advertising Shotshell
Z8523 12 Ga. Winchester "Powder Sample” Advertising Shotshell
Description: Decent example of Winchester’s famous "Powder Sample Shell.” These were introduced in 1903 and featured several different "SMOKLESS” powder samples. This example features an extended case with a celluloid liner. The powders are loaded and separated by a cardboard wad. This example features the following 12 different powder types: Empire, New Schultze, Hazard Blue Ribbon, Walsrode, New Troisdorf, New "E.C.”, Rifleite, American Lead Shot, L. & R. Infallible, Du Pont, Ballistite, & E.C. No. 1.
This style of "Window Shell” was patented by Charles E. Roberts on February 3, 1903, as US Patent No. 719,876. The patent was assigned to Winchester and was in use for a few years. This example has the scarce four corrugations or cannelures. There are three at the top of the cup and one towards the bottom. It also has the earlier flat Winchester No. 4 W primer.
This example is intact with a few issues which are somewhat common on the "Powder Sample” shells. The outer paper cover has a few spots where the surface has flaked off. Most of the separator wads are in place. The one closest to the case mouth is angled which is allowing the samples at the top to mix. The samples within appears to be original. They also appear to have been exposed to the elements at one time or another. A few of them have a sheen on the celluloid sheet. A scarce Winchester piece that is becoming harder and harder to find.
