Z8748 George Buckel and Edward Dorsch Shotgun Patent Model
Description: Excellent patent example for an improvement in shotguns. This is the actual sample submitted with the U.S. Patent application. This improvement in shotguns was patented by George Buckel and Edward Dorsch of Monroe Michigan on April 8, 1856, as U.S. Patent No. 14,597.
"This invention consists in giving the bore of the gun the undulating form described as follows, for the purpose of preventing the scattering of the shot to too great a degree.” Basically, the bore is restricted and then increase a few times throughout the length of the barrel. The idea was to keep the shot pattern from opening too much. This is still something that can plague every waterfowler and upland hunter. If your pattern is too wide, it creates holes. Today, we just throw a new choke in and keep on hunting!
This lot includes the original patent sample and remnants of the patent office tag. The sample is made of wood with three metal bands. The top of the barrel is marked, "G. Buckel. E. Dorsch.” With impressed lettering that has been painted red. The original purple patent tag string is still tied around the wrist of the stock. An excellent example and a one-of-a-kind item that would look great in any Lake Erie waterfowling collection.
