Z8897 .30 Pedersen Device Ammunition "Top Secret"
Description: Nice box containing forty .30 Pedersen Device cartridges, manufactured by REM-UMC for World War I. At the time, the Pedersen Device was considered Top Secret, which is why the box is intentionally mislabeled ".30 Pistol.” Fortunately, WWI ended before the devices could be deployed. As a result, both the devices and their ammunition were ordered to be destroyed.
The Pedersen Device was an innovative attachment designed to convert a standard M1903 Springfield rifle into a semi-automatic weapon capable of firing pistol-caliber cartridges. Intended to give American infantrymen a major firepower advantage in trench warfare, the device could be installed in under 15 seconds and turned a bolt-action rifle into a fast-firing weapon ideal for close-quarters combat. However, the Armistice in November 1918 rendered it obsolete before it could be issued in the field.
Each cartridge features a full metal jacket (FMJ) bullet, a brass case with a single smooth cannelure, and a copper primer with black sealant.
This is a one-piece box with a slide-out tray holding the cartridges. Please note: both end flaps are torn off. The box shows soiling and typical shelf wear, with tape residue on two sides. One corner of the interior tray is broken. A must-have for any WWI or M1903 collector! The label reads as follows:
