Z8934 British .400/.360 Nitro Express Cartridge 2-3/4”
Description: Nice example of the British .400/.360 Nitro Express sporting cartridge, manufactured by Eley of London. This cartridge features a round-nose, soft-point jacketed bullet, held in place with three stab crimps just above the shoulder. The brass case is necked and fitted with a copper primer. There is minor oxidation on the bullet’s nose, and the case shows a few small spots of age-related discoloration.
Originally developed in the early 1900s, the .400/.360 Nitro Express was one of several British medium-bore cartridges designed for use in single-shot and double rifles intended for colonial hunting. Eley’s version was loaded with smokeless powder ("Nitro”) and typically fired a 210–225 grain bullet at around 2,150 feet per second. It was well-regarded as a medium-game cartridge—suitable for deer, boar, and antelope—and saw widespread use across India and Africa during the height of the British Empire.
Though long obsolete and no longer in commercial production, the .400/.360 NE is still prized by collectors and enthusiasts of classic British sporting rifles. This example is a fine representative of that golden age of safari and big game hunting.
