Packet of Six .44 Combustible Envelope Cartridges by (H.W. Mason)
Z8931 Packet of Six .44 Combustible Envelope Cartridges by (H.W. Mason)
Description: Nice intact post–Civil War packet containing six combustible envelope cartridges for use with Remington, Colt, and other revolving holster pistols.
Henry W. Mason began his ammunition career working for Crittenden & Tibbals of South Coventry, Connecticut. By the early 1860s, Mason had established his own cartridge-making operation in a warehouse owned by Walter A. Loomis.
According to tax records compiled by Lou Behling, Mason was manufacturing paper ball cartridges as early as 1863. While the exact start date of his independent business remains uncertain, 1863 serves as a key reference point. He continued producing paper cartridges for percussion-era firearms as late as 1883.
The construction of this ammunition packet is typical of H.W. Mason. It consists of a pasteboard box wrapped in paper with a black-ink label. The exterior was then varnished to protect against moisture, handling, and wear.
Following the Civil War, large numbers of surplus percussion revolvers remained in civilian hands, creating a steady demand for combustible paper cartridges well into the 1870s and beyond. Makers like Mason filled this niche by supplying affordable ammunition for veterans, frontiersmen, and civilians who continued using these reliable handguns.
This example is in excellent condition. All seams are tight, and the packet shows very minimal soiling. There is one crack in the paper along the side. This packet was formerly part of the collection of noted author and researcher Terry White. A small sticker bearing White’s collection number remains affixed to the back of the wrapper, verifying its provenance.
