Henry E. Leman Rifle Manufacturer Advertising Broadside, 1867
Z8944 Henry E. Leman Rifle Manufacturer Advertising Broadside, 1867
Description: Excellent example of a scarce advertising broadside issued by the Lancaster Rifle Works and Conestoga Rifle Mills, founded in 1834 by Henry E. Leman (1812–1887) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Leman was a prominent American gunsmith best known for his percussion rifles, widely used in the Western fur trade and by Indian traders.
This broadside comes with its original mailing envelope; an advertising cover printed in the upper left corner:
"HENRY E. LEMAN / RIFLE MANUFACTURERS / Lancaster, Pa.”
The envelope bears a 3-cent "Blackjack” stamp featuring President Andrew Jackson, in use from 1863 to 1869, and is postmarked with a Lancaster, PA CDS. It is addressed to Mr. H.L. Minnis? in Sperryville, Rappahannock County, Virginia.
Both items show expected folds from mailing. The envelope has moderate soiling, paper limpness, and several creases. The broadside is clean with minimal soiling and retains a small section of the envelope adhered to the reverse side.
A scarce and desirable piece of firearms advertising ephemera, complete with its original postal cover — a fantastic collectible from the Indian Trade era and early American arms manufacturing.
Broadside Measures: H 7.5” W 4.75”
Envelope Measures: H 3” x 5.25”
Price: $225.00
