Z8950 .56-46 Spencer Sporting Rimfire Box by U.M.C.
Description: Scarce empty box that once contained twenty-five .56-46 Spencer rimfire cartridges, manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company (U.M.C.) of Bridgeport, Connecticut. These cartridges were intended for use in the .56-46 Spencer sporting rifle, a popular post-Civil War firearm.

This is a two-piece buff-colored box featuring a green top label with black print. The side seal is also green with black print, while the bottom "Guarantee” label is peach colored with black print. U.M.C. manufactured rimfire cartridges from 1867 to 1911. The illustrated cartridge on the label bears an impressed "U” headstamp, which is believed to have been introduced around 1885.

Boxes in this caliber are considered rare compared to other Spencer variants. This particular example comes from the collection of noted ammunition historian George Kass and is published in both Hoyem’s and Marcot’s reference works—adding further credibility and collector appeal.

The box remains structurally sound, showing typical shelf wear and soiling. The most noticeable wear is on the bottom, where the label is well worn. Despite this, it presents very well and would make an excellent display piece alongside a .56-46 Spencer rifle or within a historical ammunition collection.
