Z8951 Standard .58 Musket Cartridge of the American Civil War (1861–1865)
Description: Minty example of the standard .58 caliber paper-wrapped cartridge used by Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861–1865). This type of cartridge was designed for use in a variety of rifled muskets, including the Springfield Models 1855, 1861, and 1863, as well as several Southern-manufactured variants.
Each cartridge consists of three key components: a .58 caliber conical lead bullet, a black powder charge, and an outer paper wrapper. The bullet features an open conical cavity at its base; when fired, the expanding "skirt” would engage the rifling inside the barrel, providing greater range and accuracy over earlier smoothbore designs.
These cartridges were typically issued in packs of ten, often accompanied by a separate roll of twelve percussion caps. They were the standard infantry ammunition throughout the war and played a central role in the devastating effectiveness of rifled muskets on the battlefield.
This particular example is in exceptionally fine, minty condition, having been carefully removed from an original arsenal pack. It is tied in accordance with the 1861 U.S. Ordnance regulations. I’ve included a digital X-ray image of this exact cartridge, clearly showing the bullet within.
A superb, well-preserved specimen that would be a standout addition to any advanced Civil War cartridge or ammunition collection.
