Z8959 Packet of 6 .31 Colt or Whitney Pocket Revolver Cartridges (Published)
Description: Nice Post-Civil War H.W. Mason .31 Caliber Combustible Envelope Cartridge Packet. Offered here is a well-preserved post-Civil War ammunition packet containing six combustible envelope cartridges loaded with Hazard powder, intended for use in Colt or Whitney .31 caliber pocket revolvers.

Henry W. Mason began his ammunition career with Crittenden & Tibbals of South Coventry, Connecticut. By the early 1860s, he had established his own cartridge-manufacturing operation in a warehouse owned by Walter A. Loomis.

According to tax records compiled by Lou Behling, Mason was producing paper ball cartridges as early as 1863. While the precise founding date of his independent business remains uncertain, 1863 serves as a reliable benchmark. He continued manufacturing paper cartridges for percussion-era firearms through at least 1883.

This packet is characteristic of Mason’s work. It consists of a pasteboard box wrapped in paper with a printed black-ink label, then varnished to protect against moisture, handling, and general wear.

After the Civil War, large quantities of surplus percussion revolvers remained in civilian hands, creating sustained demand for combustible cartridges well into the 1870s and beyond. Makers like Mason filled this niche, supplying affordable ammunition to veterans, frontiersmen, and civilians who continued to rely on these dependable sidearms.

This example is in very nice condition. All seams are tight, with minimal surface soiling. Corners show only light wear, consistent with age. Powder can still be heard shifting inside. This packet was formerly part of the collection of noted author and researcher Terry White. A small sticker bearing White’s collection number remains affixed to the reverse of the wrapper, attesting to its provenance.
