Z8965 .31 Volcanic Pistol Cartridge (Brass/Cork)
Description: Nice example of a .31 Volcanic pistol cartridge. This is the smallest caliber produced in the Volcanic line, designated as the No. 1 cartridge. It features the post–December 1855 configuration with a brass base cap, cork wafer, and internal iron anvil. The self-contained cartridge was a key innovation of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, eliminating the need for separate powder, ball, and percussion cap. These cartridges were originally packaged in tin containers, arranged in two rows of 100 rounds each.

This particular example exhibits light oxidation, and the brass base insert sits at a slight angle—typical of many surviving specimens due to the aging of materials over time. The .31 caliber was commonly used in the early Volcanic pistols, which played a foundational role in the development of lever-action firearms and eventually led to the formation of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.
