Z8969 14x33R Austrian Wänzl Rimfire Cartridge (1867)
Description: Nice Austrian rimfire cartridge known as the 14×33R Wänzl (or Waenzl) rimfire cartridge. In an effort to modernize its military firearms after the Austro-Prussian War, the Austrian government adopted a breechloading conversion system developed by Vienna gunmaker F. Wänzl. This system was used to convert existing M1854/58 Lorenz percussion rifles into breechloaders.
This cartridge represents Austria’s first standardized metallic rimfire cartridge. It features a flat-nose lead bullet with two exposed lubricant cannelures, crimped into a copper rimfire case. As with most cartridges of the era, it is loaded with black powder.
This variant is headstamped "R.W.”, indicating production by Robert Woinar of Vienna, Austria.
The example offered here is in very nice condition, showing only a few small spots and light-colored areas on the case, along with a couple of very minor, nominal dents. The impressed "R.W.” headstamp is highlighted, and the bullet remains free of oxidation.
