Z9002 .50-55-430 Carbine Cartridge, M1870 Carbine I.E.P.#452
Description: Nice example of the .50-55-430 carbine cartridge manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal. This cartridge features a 430-grain, .50 caliber round-nose lead bullet seated over 55 grains of black powder. It is an internally Benet-primed centerfire cartridge—an early U.S. military design.
Intended for use in the .50 caliber Model 1870 carbines, this cartridge has a copper case with a cylindrical throat near the mouth. The Benet-style copper cup primer is held in place with two internal crimps spaced 0.200" apart and located 0.206" from the base.
These were manufactured from January 1872 through August 1873, during the early years of the Indian War period. For a sectioned example, see reference No. 452.
A solid example of a scarce and historically important early U.S. military carbine cartridge. There is writing on one side of the case that could be removed if desired.
