Z9065 Swiss 17mm Paper Cartridge Wrapped in Book Text
Description: Very fine example of an early Swiss 17mm paper cartridge, likely predating the standardization seen with the M1842 Swiss musket. This particular example is identifiable as early production based on the construction of the tail—rather than being sharply and precisely folded as seen in later examples, this one features a more primitive twisted or loosely folded tail, a trait typical of transitional or pre-standardized cartridges.
These cartridges were designed for use in Swiss canton-issued muskets, many of which were based on the French Model 1777/AN IX musket pattern.
What makes this cartridge especially unique is the wrapper paper, which is a fragment of page 53 from the 1774 book "Tarif der Emolumenten für die Aemter Thun und Oberhofen”, printed in Bern by the High-Governmental Printing Office (Hoch-Obrigkeitlichen Druckerey). Translated, the title reads:
"Tariff of the Emoluments for the Offices of Thun and Oberhofen," Bern, At the High-Governmental Printing Office, 1774.
The paper used to construct the cartridge features Fraktur-style German typeface, and is cemented at the nose of the ball, which was typical of the wrapping method during the flintlock era. The paper itself is clean and well-preserved, making this a truly exquisite and rare example of an early Swiss paper cartridge, wrapped in the traditional way using recycled printed material—a common practice in 18th and early 19th century military logistics.
This cartridge is not only a fine representation of early Swiss military ammunition, but also an artifact that preserves a tangible piece of 18th-century print history.
