Z9050 .56-50 Spencer Rimfire Cartridge Box by U.M.C.

Description: This is a very nice example of an empty .56-50 Spencer cartridge box manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. It is a commercial box that originally held 25 cartridges for use in the Model 1865 Spencer carbine.

After the Civil War, large numbers of Spencer carbines were sold as surplus and remained in use well into the early 1900’s. Commercial ammunition manufacturers, like UMC, continued producing .56-50 Spencer cartridges into the early 20th century to meet demand from civilian shooters.

This box retains both its top label and bottom guarantee label, with a pinkish hue and black print. The side seal strip is largely intact, with only a few small pieces missing. Surface wear is minimal, and the interior remains clean and well-preserved.

An excellent specimen overall—ideal for display alongside a Model 1865 Spencer carbine or as part of a 19th-century ammunition collection.
