Z8999 .45 Unknown Cartridge
Description: Decent example of an unidentified .44/.45 caliber cartridge. This cartridge remains unclassified under official nomenclature. It was cataloged by Hoyem using dimensional references such as ".45-1.452”" and ".45 1-5/16”," while Buttweiler later referred to it as a .56-46 Spencer Long centerfire. Although its exact designation remains unknown, the cartridge exhibits characteristics consistent with U.M.C. manufacture.
It features a paper-patched, flat-nose lead bullet seated in a necked brass case with a Berdan-style primer. The headstamp area shows a raised ring, a noteworthy detail for comparative identification.
This example is in fair to good condition. The bullet shows oxidation, with remnants of the original paper patch still visible at the case mouth. There's a small bump near the nose of the bullet, and the case body displays scattered spots of surface oxidation. Despite these condition issues, this is a respectable representative of an enigmatic cartridge type—likely intended for a firearm with a tubular magazine, as implied by the flat-nosed projectile.
