Empty Box for .45-60 Reloading Cartridges by U.S.C.Co.
Z9078 Empty Box for .45-60 Reloading Cartridges by U.S.C.Co.
Description: A fine original two-piece empty box that once held twenty .45-60 solid head reloading cartridges, manufactured by the United States Cartridge Company (U.S.C.Co.) of Lowell, Massachusetts. The box remains structurally sound and still includes its original interior divider.
The top orange label with black print is fully intact, though it shows moderate soiling and typical age wear. The orange side-seal label wraps around all four sides of the box, with black printed text on three of them. The front label reads:
"20 / SOLID HEAD RE-LOADING CARTRIDGES / For Target Practice, / Long Range, Military and Sporting Rifles, / MANUFACTURED BY / U.S. CARTRIDGE CO., LOWELL, MASS., U.S.A.”
There are no split seams, and the box displays only expected shelf wear and soiling. The bottom label shows minor damage where the side seal was cut, with some label distortion where it has been pressed down in a few areas.
The .45-60 cartridge was introduced in the late 1870s for use in the Winchester Model 1876 lever-action rifle. Developed as a shortened version of the .45-70 Government cartridge, it allowed for reliable feeding in the Winchester’s toggle-link action. Popular during the late 19th century, the .45-60 was favored by hunters and frontiersmen for medium to large game.
This is an attractive and complete example of a period U.S.C.Co. cartridge box—an excellent addition for collectors of Winchester-era ammunition or early American cartridge packaging.
