Z9277 Federal 28 Gauge Sam Walton Special Shotshell
Description: Offered here is a scarce 28-gauge shotshell manufactured by the Federal Cartridge Company, notable for its association with Sam Walton. This example features a dark red plastic case with a high brass head (two corrugations) and is loaded with No. 7 ½ shot — a size commonly used for dove hunting.
What makes this specimen especially unusual is the yellow cursive case wall print (C.W.P.), which reads:
"7 ½ 7 ½ / Sam Walton / Special”
Samuel Moore Walton (1918–1992), best known as the founder of Walmart, was also an avid outdoorsman and hunter. Federal’s "Sam Walton Special” shotshell reflects this personal side of his life. The example offered here comes directly from the collection of David "Doc” Frederickson, widely regarded as Federal’s unofficial historian, who assembled the largest and most comprehensive Federal shotshell collection in the United States. This provenance adds further weight to its desirability.
The exact origins of this style remain uncertain, though it is believed these shells may have been produced as a promotional tie-in with the Remington Model 1100 "Sam Walton Special” 28-gauge shotguns. Production numbers are unknown, but examples outside of Doc Frederickson’s collection are virtually unseen in the hobby.
Condition is excellent for its type: the case wall print is sharp and legible, and this particular specimen is especially noteworthy as the print runs lengthwise along the case — a highly unusual orientation that may represent a custom or experimental variant. There are a few fingerprints on the cup which is common.
A true rarity in Federal shotshell collecting, combining unusual print, limited production, and direct connection to both Sam Walton and the Frederickson collection.
I only have one of these available!
