.56-56 Spencer Functional Dummy Cartridge – U.M.C.
Z9316 .56-56 Spencer Functional Dummy Cartridge – U.M.C.
Description: Offered here is a nice example of a No. 56 (also known as the .56-56 Spencer) functional dummy cartridge, manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company (U.M.C.). These cartridges were produced for use in surplus Model 1860 Spencer carbines and rifles, serving as inspection, armorer, and training rounds following the Civil War.
This specimen features a pointed lead bullet with two cannelures, securely crimped into a copper case. A single hole in the case wall identifies it as a factory-manufactured dummy, rather than a fired or deactivated live round. Unlike standard service ammunition, these dummies were produced in limited quantities, making them significantly scarcer and highly desirable to collectors today.
This example remains in nice overall condition. The bullet shows light oxidation, typical of age, and there is a very small bump on one side of the case. A very solid and representative example of this seldom-seen U.M.C. variant.
