Z9317 Early .44 Henry Pointed Cartridge with Clipped Nose
Description: Offered here is a hard-to-find early variant of the .44 Henry rimfire cartridge, belonging to the pointed, short case family. This cartridge represents one of the transitional forms between the early pointed-bullet Henry rounds and the later flat-nose ".44 Henry Flat” configuration.
This example features a pointed bullet held by a four-segment crimp and was likely manufactured by New Haven Arms or Crittenden & Tibbals, both of which produced early Henry ammunition. According to Behling, these cartridges were once believed to be possibly trimmed by Winchester and re-marketed as .44 Henry Flats.
In Behling’s book (Plate 140, No. 9), the illustrated example bears a raised "H” headstamp, while this particular specimen is unheadstamped—a characteristic shared with cartridges from a documented Winchester box, per Behling’s notes.
Regardless of origin, this is a distinctive and recognized early .44 Henry variant, valued for its place in the developmental lineage of America’s first successful repeating rifle cartridge. This specimen shows a lightly oxidized bullet and a tarnished, spotted copper case, typical of its age and rarity.
