Z9362 .45 Revolver Ball Cartridge – Model 1909
Description: Nice example of a Model 1909 Ball Cartridge for the .45-caliber revolvers. This cartridge was developed to meet the U.S. Army’s renewed demand for effective stopping power in service revolvers. Several variations were produced, and this specimen represents the third variant, known as the standard production model, manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal.
Designed specifically for use in the Colt Double Action Revolver, Model of 1909, this cartridge incorporated several design updates. The rim diameter was increased to .536–.540 inches to prevent the round from chambering in earlier Single Action Army revolvers. The bullet seating crimp was moved rearward to .48 inch from the case mouth, while maintaining the 250-grain bullet weight.
Production ran from 1909 through the final order in April 1915, with the Hackley, Woodin & Scranton (HWS) reference noting the last known headstamp dated December 1913.
This particular example was manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal in November 1911. It features the copper F.A. No. 42 primer, adopted in October 1911, with a black primer annulus. The cartridge remains in very good condition, showing only a few tiny bumps on the brass case.
A great example of the standard production variant made expressly for the Colt D.A. Revolver, Model of 1909 — an important transitional cartridge in U.S. military revolver development.
