Z9393 Civil War .36 Colt Navy Ammunition Packet by Hazard
Description: Nice example of an original Civil War–era ammunition packet. This packet contains six .36 caliber "Pressed Waterproof” cartridges for the Model 1851 and Model 1861 Colt "Navy” Revolvers. These cartridges were manufactured by the Hazard Powder Company of Hazardville, Connecticut, and would be correct to display alongside any percussion Colt "Navy” revolver.
These cartridges were produced under U.S. Patent No. 34,725, awarded to R. Ogden Dormeus and Bern L. Budd of New York, New York, on March 18, 1862. Each cartridge was made from compressed powder—known as a "powder cake”—which was attached to the base of the bullet and coated with a thin layer of collodion to make it both waterproof and fully combustible.
Unlike many other packets of the period, most Hazard Powder Company packets were constructed of tightly wrapped paper and secured with a paper band. This example remains in decent shape overall. The paper band is torn on the reverse, but the packet remains complete. When carefully opened, it reveals six .36 Navy cartridges along with a single twist of percussion caps. The outer wrapper shows light soiling from age and handling, and the label is fully legible.
This packet comes from the renowned collection of Terry White, with his collection sticker still affixed to the back of the wrapper. A fine and scarce example of a Civil War ammunition packet, ideal for display alongside any M1851 or M1861 Colt Navy revolver.
