.56-50 Spencer Rimfire Shot Cartridge Box – U.M.C.
Z9397 .56-50 Spencer Rimfire Shot Cartridge Box – U.M.C.
Description: Excellent and published example of an empty .56-50 Spencer shot cartridge box manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. This is a commercial production box that originally contained twenty-five shot cartridges made for use in surplus Model 1865 Spencer carbines.
Following the Civil War, large numbers of Spencer carbines were sold as surplus and continued in civilian use well into the early 1900s. Commercial ammunition makers like UMC produced .56-50 Spencer cartridges well into the early 20th century to supply this enduring demand.
This box retains both its pink top label and orange guarantee label on the bottom. The side seal strip is intact and marked with the number "6” in pencil on all four sides, denoting the shot size. The top label features a red over label with black print indicating "Shot Cartridges,” along with a "No. 6 Shot” stamp positioned just above the cartridge illustration.
An excellent and published specimen overall, showing fine preservation and strong labeling. A standout piece for display with a Model 1865 Spencer carbine or within any 19th-century cartridge collection.
