12 Ga. Peters Referee Window Shotshell
Z9401 12 Ga. Peters Referee Window Shotshell
Description: Offered here is a nice 12-gauge salesman sample "window” shotshell manufactured by the Peters Cartridge Company under their well-known "REFEREE” brand. This display cartridge features a light purple top wad with black print, a faded purple paper case, a brass head, and a punched copper primer. The viewing window has become a bit hazy with age, but the internal components remain visible. The shell is loaded with 1 oz. of No. 8 shot over 3 drams of semi-smokeless powder.
Produced in limited numbers as salesman samples, these "window” shells allowed Peters representatives to demonstrate the construction and quality of their ammunition to retailers and sportsmen. Unlike standard production shells, they were made strictly for display rather than firing, making surviving examples highly collectible today. A tough one to find if you are trying to complete a salesman sample box.
A fine piece of early Peters Cartridge Company advertising, ideal for display in any vintage shotshell or ammunition collection.
