Z9408 MBA 201 Flare – MB Associates – 1970’s
Description: Offered is a nice example of an MBA 201 flare manufactured by MBAssociates in the 1970s. This device falls under U.S. Patent No. 3,855,930, issued December 24, 1974 and assigned to MBAssociates of San Ramon, California. The patent covers an improved personal-distress rocketry system designed to carry a flare or signal payload to altitude for aerial display.
The invention features a telescopically assembled dual tubular housing containing a propulsion charge, ignitor, time-delay fuse, and signal flare. A spin-stabilizing nozzle produces a predictable flight path, and a specially arranged propellant spacer prevents incorrect installation while retaining the propellant safely during combustion. The design was intended to improve reliability across a range of temperatures and to ensure consistent, complete combustion of the pyrotechnic components.
This example has a two-port nozzle roll-crimped into the rear of the motor body. The round-nose aluminum case contains the flare or smoke mixture. Overall, a solid and representative MBA 201 flare based on the 1970s patent — excellent for display, research, or as part of a collection of Cold-War/experimental pyrotechnic devices.
