Z9710 .56-52 Spencer Rimfire Cartridge
Description: Nice example of an early .56-52 Spencer rimfire cartridge. The .56-52 (also known as No. 52 rimfire) cartridge was introduced in early 1865. This example is undoubtedly an early production piece manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company (UMC). According to Behling, UMC produced the .56-52 from around 1866, continuing under REM UMC until World War I.
The round features a flat-tipped bullet with two exposed grease grooves (cannelures). The bullet is roll-crimped into a copper case that is slightly tapered or very mildly bottlenecked.
This cartridge could be chambered in both the M1860 Spencer carbine and rifle, as well as the M1865 carbine. This example shows a lightly oxidized bullet and a few small green spots on the case. A solid, early representative example of this classic commercial rimfire cartridge.
