Z9712 Civil War .56-56 Spencer Carbine or Rifle Cartridge
Description: Decent example of the Civil War–era No. 56 cartridge, commonly known as the .56-56 Spencer rimfire. This cartridge was used in the Model 1860 Spencer carbines and rifles, as well as the No. 56 Ballard and the No. 56 Joslyn carbine. Spencer ammunition was typically packaged in sleeves of seven, with six sleeves per box, for a total of 42 cartridges.
This example features a pointed bullet with two cannelures crimped into a copper case. The bullet shows light oxidation, and the copper case displays spotting and age-related toning. There is a small crack in the case right at the case mouth which was probably caused by crimping. Overall, a decent example of a Civil War-era No. 56 Spencer rimfire cartridge.
