Z9898 British .577 2-3/4” Nitro for Black Powder Cartridge - Empty
Description: Decent example of a .577 Nitro for Black Powder (NfBP) cartridge with a 2¾-inch drawn brass case. This example is empty and does not contain any powder with the exception of the primer. The bullet can easily be twisted out and placed back into the case.
This specimen features a 560-grain paper patched round nose lead bullet seated in a brass case fitted with a copper primer. The bullet weighs 560 grains and the case weighs 356 grains for a total weight of 916 grains. The paper patch was commonly used on early express cartridges to help reduce fouling from black powder while allowing a tight fit in the bore.
The .577 Nitro for Black Powder was introduced during the transitional period when smokeless powder cartridges were becoming more common. These cartridges were designed to provide black powder performance using early smokeless propellants, allowing shooters to safely use them in rifles originally built for black powder. Cartridges of this type were widely used for big game hunting during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
This example shows a few small nips in the paper patch and several spots on the case consistent with age. Overall, it remains a nice representative example of a classic British big-game sporting cartridge.
