Z9906 Maynard .64 Shot Cartridge – Model 1865
Description: Nice example of a .64 Maynard shot cartridge. This specimen is in decent condition and represents the earlier variant without the brass or copper rivet in the base. This reloadable cartridge has been fired at least once but still retains its overall shape and form.
The cartridge was designed for use in Maynard carbine and sporting rifles produced by the Massachusetts Arms Company. When purchasing a Maynard firearm, customers could often order an additional interchangeable barrel in .55 or .64 caliber, effectively allowing the rifle to be converted for use as a shotgun.
These shot cartridges were typically handloaded by the user, allowing the shooter to select their preferred shot size and powder charge. This feature gave the Maynard system notable versatility as a multipurpose sporting arm suitable for both small game and general field use.
Overall, this remains a very nice representative example of a .64 Maynard shot cartridge. The inside of the case shows oxidation from having been fired. An interesting and somewhat uncommon piece of early American reloadable ammunition.
