Z9911 2nd Pattern McKeever Cartridge Box – Rock Island Arsenal
Description: Rough but intact example of a 2nd Pattern McKeever cartridge box manufactured by the Rock Island Arsenal. This box is configured to carry 20 rounds of .45-70 Government ammunition in two rows of ten rounds each. Two of these boxes were typically issued per soldier, providing a total of 40 rounds.
This second pattern cartridge box features the brass tab escutcheon along with the top corner reinforcement staples. The tool pocket is positioned to one side, as expected for this pattern.
The leather is dry, exhibiting moderate to heavy surface crazing, but the box remains structurally sound. The stitching is mostly intact, with some separation visible around the corners. An old price of "$3.00” is written on the left belt loop. The name "LEE” is carved into the back of the box between the belt loops, and both "LEE” and "ORK” are written on the leather loop backings. There are also a few inspector initials present on these same areas.
This example has not been cleaned or oiled and remains in true "as found” condition. A faint oval "US” stamp is still visible on the outer flap.
Overall, a decent, honest example of a 2nd Pattern McKeever cartridge box with good character and clear signs of period use.
