Z9938 Experimental .30-06 AP Steel Case Cartridge with Green Teflon Coating
Description: Excellent example of an experimental .30-06 steel case cartridge coated in green Teflon, developed in the early 1950s. This series of experimental rounds was introduced circa 1953 at both Frankford Arsenal and Lake City Army Ammunition Plant as part of ongoing post-war ammunition research.
According to George A. Punnett, the Teflon coating "was intended to aid feeding and extraction, as well as to help prevent cook-offs.”
This example is loaded with an armor-piercing full metal jacket (AP-FMJ) projectile. Both the steel case and bullet retain their distinctive green Teflon coating, with only minor wear evident at the tip of the projectile. It features a brass primer with a red annulus sealant and is from a box dated April 1956.
A scarce and short-lived experimental variant, this cartridge represents a fascinating transitional phase in U.S. military small arms ammunition development following the Second World War.
