Z9941 Rare .44 Army Bartholow Ammunition Packet - Published
Description: Very rare Civil War-era two-piece matchbox-style ammunition packet produced by the Bartholow Cartridge Manufacturing Company of Pennsylvania. This empty packet originally contained six .44 Army "Holster Pistol” cartridges intended for use in Colt .44 Army revolvers.
This cartridge type was patented by Dr. Roberts Bartholow on May 21, 1861 (U.S. Patent No. 32,345), and its construction is similar to that of Augustus George Hazard’s patented designs. The cartridge features a pointed lead bullet with a single cannelure and a rebated base. The powder charge was formed into a solid cake and attached to the rear of the bullet by a silk strip, after which the entire assembly was coated to render it both waterproof and combustible.
The box itself is in excellent condition and originates from the collection of noted author and ammunition historian Dean S. Thomas, with his collection number "39” written in black ink on the reverse. There is a visible area on the back where an old label was once affixed. The interior tray shows a repair to the lower left inner seam, noted for accuracy. The packet is constructed of pasteboard covered in blue paper, with a white buff label printed in black ink.
A solid and highly desirable example of a scarce .44 Army ammunition packet by Bartholow Cartridge Manufacturing Company, representing an important early Civil War cartridge system.
