Z9944 Confederate .69 Two-Piece Explosive Bullet - Published
Description: Outstanding, published example of the very rare Confederate two-piece explosive bullet, formerly part of the renowned collection of Dean Thomas. This is the exact specimen illustrated in his Round Ball to Rimfire series.
Thomas describes the construction as follows: the projectile consists of a hollow cylindrical body with a central raised boss approximately 3/10 inch high at the base, designed to hold a percussion compound. The nose section contains an iron pin approximately 2/10 inch in diameter, intended to align just short of the percussion compound when assembled. Upon impact, the pin would be driven into the compound, initiating the internal powder charge.
This example retains a portion of the original iron pin, though the tip has deteriorated from oxidation. The projectile exhibits an attractive mottled patina, and both components are marked "129,” corresponding to Thomas’s original cataloging of the piece.
Examples of this type are exceedingly scarce, with few appearing publicly on the market. A significant opportunity to acquire a documented and published specimen—arguably one of the most desirable forms available to collectors.
