.44 Merwin & Hulbert Revolver Shot Cartridge – U.M.C.
Z9951 .44 Merwin & Hulbert Revolver Shot Cartridge – U.M.C.
Description: Excellent example of the scarce .44 Merwin & Hulbert "shot” cartridge manufactured by the Union Metallic Cartridge Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut. These cartridges were intended for use in the large frame single action "Army” revolvers and large frame double action revolvers produced by Merwin & Hulbert.
This cartridge type appears in U.M.C. catalogs between 1899 and 1910, and production may have extended slightly beyond that range. They were typically loaded with No. 8 or No. 10 lead shot.
The design incorporates the patented wooden shot-case developed by Marcellus Hartley and Alfred J. Hobbs in 1889. This system utilizes a rigid, bored wooden insert to contain the shot, with a thicker forward section for strength. The wooden case is secured within the metallic shell by crimping and features longitudinal grooves to ensure complete fracture upon firing, thereby preventing disruption of the shot pattern. The design is durable, moisture-resistant, and well-suited to repeated handling.
This example remains in excellent condition. The case shows some spotting, and the wooden shot-case (sabot) retains its original wax coating.
A solid example of a hard-to-find revolver shot cartridge utilizing an innovative late 19th-century design.
