Z9946 Indian War Aqua Pharmaceutical Bottle with Applied Top - Published
Description: Excellent excavated Indian War–era aqua glass pharmaceutical or utility bottle recovered from Fort Pembina in the Dakota Territory. This specimen is one of several recovered from documented privy excavations at the site, which have produced a wide range of well-preserved artifacts spanning the Civil War through the Indian War period.
Established in 1870–1871 just west of the Red River, Fort Pembina was built to monitor Sioux activity and protect settlers along the Red River corridor. The post remained active until its destruction by fire in 1895, with troops also participating in operations related to the Fenian Raids.
This bottle measures just over 3 inches in height and features clear mold seams along both sides, as well as a circumferential seam at the shoulder. The applied lip is crudely finished. The aqua glass exhibits areas of mineralization consistent with burial, and the bottle remains unembossed, free of chips or cracks, and still retains its original cork stopper.
Notably, this exact specimen is illustrated in Excavations at Fort Pembina, having been recovered from Feature 11—identified by Tom Askjem as the "West Sink at the East Company Quarters.” Distinctive markings, including a shadow at the lip and specific spotting on the glass, allow for positive identification as the published example.
An excellent, well-documented artifact from a significant northern frontier military post.
