Z9949 Indian War Stoneware Ginger Beer Bottle - Published
Description: Excellent excavated Indian War–era stoneware ginger beer or ale bottle recovered from Fort Pembina in the Dakota Territory. This specimen is one of several recovered from documented privy excavations at the site, which have yielded a wide range of well-preserved artifacts dating from the Civil War through the Indian War period.

Established in 1870–1871 just west of the Red River, Fort Pembina was constructed to monitor Sioux activity and protect settlers along the Red River corridor. The post remained in use until its destruction by fire in 1895, and troops stationed there also participated in operations associated with the Fenian Raids.

This stoneware ginger beer or ale bottle stands slightly over 8 inches in height and features the classic two-tone finish, with a tan salt-glazed top and a contrasting Bristol-glazed body. The exterior glaze remains in excellent condition. A vertical oval stamp near the base identifies this as a product of the Port-Dundas Pottery Company of Glasgow, Scotland.

Notably, this exact specimen is illustrated in Excavations at Fort Pembina, having been recovered from Feature 15—identified by Tom Askjem as the "East Sink at the West Company Quarters.” Distinctive characteristics, including the vertical company mark and a single chip along the lower edge, allow for positive identification as the published example. It is one of five stoneware beer or ale bottles recovered from Feature 15 and the only example bearing a vertical company stamp.

An excellent, well-documented artifact from a significant northern frontier military post.

Measures: 8 3/8 inches tall x 3 1/4 inches in diameter
