.50-70-450 Govt. Cartridge Winchester Contract - 1892
Z9956 .50-70-450 Govt. Cartridge Winchester Contract - 1892
Description: Nice example of a late-production .50-70-450 Government cartridge manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Company of New Haven, Connecticut. This example features a flat-nose lead bullet roll-crimped into a brass case with a brass primer.
This is a government contract round, believed to have been produced for the State of New York. As noted by researchers Hackley, Woodin & Scranton: "A late contract for Cal. 50 rifle cartridges was let to Winchester in 1892 for 500,000 rounds of ball ammunition. These were for the State of New York. A cartridge headstamped R W 3 92 may be from this order.” Please note, the month is located in the 9 o’clock position.
Production of .50-70 cartridges continued well after adoption of the .45-70 as the standard U.S. service round in 1873, with the .50-70 remaining in use among various state National Guard units into the late 19th century.
This example exhibits a nicely aged, darkened patina to the case, with scattered spotting. There are also faint remnants of an old cartridge designation written along the side, now partially worn but still visible.
A solid example of a late-contract .50-70 Government cartridge produced by Winchester.
